The Smartfoods story

Our Story

Smart Foods Limited (SFL) is a limited by liability food processing company. The Director of the company, Martin Ssali, while still a student of Food Science and Technology at Makerere University in 2007, ventured into the unknown theory of soybean and ingeniously perfected the art of Tofu (soy meats) making over time.

The company was registered in 2009 after the initial founder research and product development trials to enable market testing of the food innovations. With numerous market lessons learnt involving many failures and successes, in 2019, SFL kick started the full scale commercialisation efforts of the patented coconut-soymilk yoghurts, and has gone further to commercialise other patented products including Smart Soy Mchuzi mix, a high protein soy powder based seasoning mixture and high protein sauce; an instant and vanilla flavoured soymilk powder, a dairy-milk alternative;  tofu, a leading meat alternative, targeting vegetarians and recently added a high energy and protein peanut butter with a blend of fish, soy, milk and peanuts and an alternative with sesame and soymilk, all baked with a 2nd class patent.

All products promote the healthier and responsible lifestyle, preventing malnutrition and the precursors for the numerous cancers and non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and the production operations positively impact on climate change mitigation and adaptation. The company currently employees 16 staff directly and indirectly and sources the soybeans from 400 women farmers who are registered in 3 cooperatives in Eastern Uganda.

All the products of Smart Foods are mainly sold in schools and Tier 1 supermarkets in Kampala that include; all carrefour outlets, capital shoppers outlets, Fraine supermarkets, TMT outlets, Standard supermarket outlets, Quality supermarket outlets, Jazz & Embassy supermarkets, Millennium supermarket in Kisementi, Port bell supermarket outlets, Sombe supermarket in Mukono, Senana hypermarket, Quick pick supermarkets, Kenjoy supermarkets and Eco-mart supermarket among others.

The success of Smart Foods Limited is owed to the support of the Food Technology Business Incubation Center, Makerere University and partners including NSSF Hi-Innovator, Private sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU), World Food Program (WFP).
